Welcome to Core Prayers with Rabbi Ari Herzog from Chabad of the Valley. Today, we dive into the next segment of our morning prayers, focusing on the incense, known as the ketoret. Previously, we explored the significance of sacrifices in our lives, highlighting how growth often requires sacrifice. Now, we turn our attention to the fragrant spices that were offered in the Holy Temple.

God instructed Moses to prepare a unique blend of eleven spices, each with its own significance. The incense offering was a prestigious service, highlighting the importance of every ingredient. In fact, if even one was missing, it could lead to dire consequences for the priest.

But why was this service so essential? Maimonides explained that the incense countered the unpleasant odors from animal sacrifices, enhancing the dignity of the Temple. Yet, there’s a deeper meaning. The ketoret symbolizes our essential connection to God, and it teaches us that true service comes from sincerity and a desire to bond with the divine, rather than seeking recognition from others.

Incorporating the ketoret into our daily prayers reminds us of our soul’s yearning to connect with God. The Zohar teaches that engaging with the ketoret brings blessings and protection.
